Field Communication Technician
Overview
Looking for a career change? We are seeking an experienced Field Communications Technician to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing a wide variety of two-way radio and wireless communication systems focused primarily on the oil and gas and logging industries. If you have a background in mechanical, electrical, or automation work, you may already have many of the skills that translate well in this role.
Systems may include two-way radios, cellular boosters, Starlink, wireless ethernet links, tower construction and infrastructure, and SCADA systems.
Duties & Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of the Field Communications Technician include:
Install, program, troubleshoot, and service two-way radio systems, including vehicle-mounted radios, base stations, repeaters, and associated infrastructure.
Install, configure, and test cellular booster systems in a variety of environments, including vehicles, buildings, and remote/industrial sites.
Install and troubleshoot SCADA communication systems and infrastructure including antennas, cabling, and related equipment at towers and remote sites.
Safely climb communication towers and work at heights while using appropriate fall-protection equipment.
Lift, carry and maneuver equipment, tools, cable and other materials required for field installation and tower construction.
Assist with the ongoing maintenance of the company’s wireless internet network, including installation and troubleshooting wireless ethernet links at industrial, business and residential locations.
Travel regularly to remote sites in company vehicles to perform field installs, maintenance and service work. Overnight stays are not typically required.
Willing and able to perform outdoor work as required, including in cold and winter weather conditions typical of Northern Alberta.
Qualifications & Experience
7-10 years of experience with wireless communication, electrical or automation systems.
Experience with vehicle wiring and low-voltage electrical systems, including the ability to properly identify and connect to vehicle electrical systems when installing communication equipment.
Proficient in the safe and effective use of hand and power tools and strong mechanical aptitude.
Working knowledge of basic networking concepts, including static IP configuration, ethernet connections, and command-line tools for troubleshooting network equipment is an asset.
Previous experience with communication tower construction and maintenance, with the ability to safely climb and perform work at heights (up to 100 ft.).
Proficient in operating test equipment such as watt meters, multimeters, and comm sets is an asset.
Current safety tickets including WHMIS, First Aid, Fall Arrest, H2S, CSO are an asset.
Preference will be given to candidates who currently live in Slave Lake, but we are also open to candidates who are willing to relocate to the area for the position.
Physically fit and able to perform the physical demands of the position with pulling cable, lifting and carrying equipment, and assisting with tower construction.
Valid Class 5 Drivers License with clean driving record.
Hours, Compensation & Benefits
Full-time position
$40 - 55/hour, plus quarterly bonus incentives for road work
Approximately $90,000 - $130,000 annually
Monday to Friday – 8am – 5pm, with occasional overtime work throughout the week
Weekends off
